Bulgaria’s GDP growth reached record levels of 7% during the first 6 months of 2008, according to a report by Macro Watch, a group formed by the Open Society Institute (OSI) in Sofia. The report proved that Bulgaria’s economy is more than holding its own among the more mature EU economies and OSI predicts that inflation during 2008 will be down to around 9%, a significant drop from present levels of around 14%. Part of the reason for the predicted fall in inflation is that the burden of rising prices has shifted away from necessities such as food to less basic-need items.

The government’s stringent economic policies are now bearing fruit; Bulgarian National Bank reserves reached record levels of €13 billion and growth of Bulgaria’s exports has exceeded imports for the second quarter in a row. In addition, tax revenues have increased after the government dramatically cut both corporate and incomes taxes to 10% at the beginning of 2008. All these factors have contributed to Bulgaria’s impressive budget surplus, with debt at its lowest level ever…

Polish GDP growth seen unchanged in Q2 -minister

Poland’s economic growth in the second quarter probably remained unchanged from the first quarter’s 6.1 percent, Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak said on Wednesday.
“We expect economic growth in the second quarter to be the same as in the first quarter,” Pawlak told Reuters on the sidelines of a farming conference in Warsaw.
Poland’s economy expanded by 6.1 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, more rapidly than expected, on the back of robust demand and investment.
The finance ministry estimates second quarter growth will reach about 6 percent, but a slowdown is expected in the second half so that overall growth for 2008 is likely to ease to 5.5 percent from 6.6 percent in 2007.

Espantosa capacidade de antecipação de quem os fez que conseguiu prever com 5 anos de antecedência as taxas de juro e os preços do combustível em 2008. (Porque se não estivessem correctos o Sr Eng não os ia exibir na AR pois não?… :))

NOTA: Se alguém souber onde estão aqueles estudos agradeço a indicação. É que me vai dar muito jeito conseguir hoje um emprestimo ás taxas de 2003/4. 😉

Economy accelerates in the first quarter

In the first quarter, gross domestic product (GDP) increased 4.2% over the same period last year, which was up from the 3.7% growth registered in the fourth quarter.

The acceleration over the previous quarter was primarily the result of faster investment growth. Investment expanded a strong 9.8% year-on-year, more than doubling the 4.0% pace seen in the previous quarter. Private consumption, on the other hand, decelerated slightly, from 5.0% annual growth in the fourth quarter to 4.3%.

Meanwhile, the net contribution of the external sector to overall growth remained largely unchanged, as both exports and imports accelerated over the preceding quarter. Exports expanded 3.8% annually (Q4 2007: +2.1% yoy), while import growth reached 7.0%, up from 6.0% in the previous quarter.

At the sector level, the acceleration was also broad-based, with all three main economic sectors registering higher growth rates than in the fourth quarter. Agriculture increased 0.6% over the same quarter last year (Q4 2007: -0.1% yoy), industry expanded 4.5% (Q4 2007: +3.8% yoy) and, finally, the service sector grew 5.2%, up from the 4.8% recorded inthe previous quarter.

The government anticipates GDP to expand 4.5% this year.

Eu troco por míudos: o PSD está para as obras públicas como eu para um Ferrari. O Ferrari é lindo, uma excelente máquina, faz inveja aos vizinhos, transportava-me para outros ambientes, mas não tenho dinheiro. Foi sempre o que MFL disse a propósito das obras: quanto vão custar e é preciso saber o que se deixa de se fazer para as pagar.
